The Augmented Reality Ballet Font from W+K

Ballet

Designers, geeks and unashamed art snobs rejoice: The Ballet Font Project is a brilliant hybrid stemming from a collaboration between the Oregon Ballet Theatre, interactive agency Fashion Buddha and ad agency Wieden + Kennedy’s WK12. Combining ballet (of all things) with augmented reality... It's a rare, interesting and fantastically inspired mashup between live performance art and cutting edge software hacks.

And it collided also with real time...being partly recorded during a live demo in Portland on the 1st of this month.

So, how did they do it? They attached used watch batteries and infrared LEDs to create a 2D motion tracking system. They then taped these little devices to ballet dancers and had then perform moves which formed letters, which will be used in a headline font called “Ligne”. Fantastic.

HTML5...WTF? Infographic.

Media_httpmediafocusc_emygp

I'm not that technical but I do understan this makes for a huge revolution in the way we experience online content. It's being touted as a game-changer for the future of the interactive web.

That, of course, is controversial for a dozen reasons. Which I won't go into, because that's what this infographic more or less shows.

From a creative perspective, the possibilities this makes for the easy realisation of dynamic, powerful and engaging interactive concepts are truly exciting.

It's  alsoa huge threat to Adobe. And there's a lot of debate about this online, so it's another thing I won't go into. 'Cos again, I don't know much about the technicalities of that. Other than this  changes everything.

If you are interested in looking into the cool things these features enable web designers to do I really recommend you check out Apple's HTML5 gallery.

On the point of vanishing

"Vanishing Point" is a bite sized piece of visual performance art by Japanese group Bonsajo. I'm really struck by the way it's exploration of geometric forms smashing together and ripping apart engages you so intensly. How amazing it would be to see this on a big screen, projection or on the side of a building even. The way the shapes morph and move across each frame is brilliant and enchanting.

The screen format too, is really intresting. A square...just completes it. It really is an amazing work full of rhythm... repetition and variation. Something to watch over, and over, and over again. they've got the tone just right with this one. Bliss.
